Former AFC Leopards forward Ezekiel Otuoma tragically passed away on Friday, December 20—a day that also marked his wife Racheal’s birthday.
Known for his talent and resilience, Otuoma’s untimely death has left a profound sense of loss in the Kenyan football community.
Racheal confirmed the heartbreaking news on TikTok with an emotional tribute, writing, “To my husband, you left a hole in my heart that no one else can fill.
Adding, “The emptiness in my arms reminds me of the love we shared. Your love was a gift, and I’ll cherish it always. It broke my heart—you left on my birthday, and it will never be the same again.”

Ezekiel, who played for clubs like AFC Leopards, Western Stima, Ulinzi Stars, and others, succumbed to Motor Neurone Disease (MND) at just 31.
Diagnosed in 2020, his health deteriorated over four years to the point where he could no longer walk or talk and was left confined to wheelchair.
Despite the challenges, his wife Racheal became his caregiver, supporting him through every step of his battle.

Rachel recalled the journey in an interview, explaining how the disease began with minor symptoms like flu and slurred speech.
After multiple tests, both in Kenya and India, the diagnosis was confirmed, devastating their hopes for a different outcome.
“We had to sit down as a family and agree that he was indeed sick. My life has never been the same since he got sick,” Rachel shared.

Despite the strain, Rachel stood by him, saying, “Friends have told me to leave him, that if roles were reversed, Otuoma would have deserted me. But even if he ever gets well and changes, I will have done my part. He treated me well, and I’ll hang around.”
The football community had rallied to support Ezekiel, with contributions including Ksh3 million from a local betting company for specialized treatment in Germany. Yet, his condition continued to worsen.
Ezekiel’s passing has drawn tributes from clubs, players, and fans alike, celebrating his contributions to Kenyan football and the courage he displayed in his battle against MND.

His wife’s poignant tribute encapsulated the depth of their love: “It broke my heart to lose you, but you didn’t go alone—a part of me went with you. Until we meet again.”
Ezekiel Otuoma’s legacy endures not only through his achievements on the field but also through the strength and love he inspired in those closest to him.
