In a powerful show of support, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has thrown his weight behind Raila Odinga’s bid for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship, calling him the leader Africa needs.
Taking to social media, Gachagua declared, “Raila Odinga is undoubtedly the best bet for the African Union Commission chairmanship. Africa deserves the best.”
He emphasized Raila’s proven leadership in uniting Africa’s diverse regions, bridging the Anglophone-Francophone divide, and championing a stronger, more independent continent.
Gachagua’s endorsement of Raila’Odinga is built on the premise that his win in Ethiopia will validate his Pan-African spirit and vision.
Heads of state will vote on Saturday to elect the next AUC Chairperson and Deputy Chairperson in the elections in the Ethiopian capital.
According to AU rules, voters cast their ballots in secret and will continue until a candidate secures support from at least two-thirds of the 55 AU member states. Consequently, a candidate needs to obtain 33 votes to win.
With the high-stakes vote set for February 15-16, Raila faces stiff competition from Djibouti’s Mahmoud Ali Youssouf and Madagascar’s Richard Randriamandrato.
