Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has unveiled the intricate tactics employed by President William Ruto to secure his support during the 2022 elections, tactics that have now led to a profound sense of betrayal.
Gachagua asserts that Ruto recognized him as the pivotal figure capable of mobilizing the necessary votes to clinch victory. Aligning with Raila Odinga, he believes, would have resulted in a humiliating defeat for Ruto.
Despite mounting pressure from family and friends to side with Uhuru Kenyatta, who was supporting Raila, Gachagua remained steadfast in his allegiance to Ruto.
In an interview with the Obinna Show, Gachagua recounted how Ruto frequently visited his home, cultivating a close relationship with his family to sway him away from Uhuru’s camp.
“That man used to come to this house all the time. Pastor Dorcas even cooked for him many times,” Gachagua recalled.
The visits intensified, with Ruto allegedly shedding tears during these encounters, pleading for Gachagua’s support.
“The guy would come here and cry, tears, Machozi. When you see a grown-up man crying, you feel for him,” Gachagua said. He described Ruto as a master manipulator, employing emotional tactics to gain his trust.
However, Gachagua now views these emotional displays as part of a calculated strategy. “If it is a woman crying or children, you would take it lightly, but a grown-up, a leader for that matter, took it seriously,” he remarked.
He feels deceived by Ruto’s use of religion and God to gain his trust, only to later betray him.
Reflecting on his decision to support Ruto, Gachagua expresses deep regret. He acknowledges that his trust in Ruto was misplaced, leading him to join the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) instead of forming a separate party for the Mt. Kenya region.
“We have learnt a bitter lesson and the mistake is mine because I fully trusted President William Ruto but he was not forthright,” Gachagua admitted. He now describes Ruto as a chronic liar who thrives on deception and betrayal.
Gachagua also regrets his public criticism of retired President Uhuru Kenyatta, clarifying that he did so at the instruction of his former boss, President Ruto.
With his influence in the Mt. Kenya region, Gachagua was instrumental in getting Ruto elected. He traversed the region with Ruto, making promises that were to be fulfilled upon being elected.
The Democracy for the Citizens party leader has since expressed his regrets at convincing the region to vote for Ruto.
As Gachagua reflects on his political journey, he remains resolute in his commitment to expose the truth and hold those in power accountable.
“With time, I will expose you to Kenyans,” he declared, vowing to continue his fight for transparency and justice.

That the former DP regrets his decision to support Ruto who he now describes as a chronic liar who thrives in deception and betrayal is a position that Gachagua has taken at almost any available opportunity and the interview with Obinna was no exception.
