In a moment that blended pride, patriotism, and promise, President William Ruto has honored Kenya’s Harambee Stars with a life-changing gift — KSh 1 million housing grants for each player and technical staff member — in recognition of their heroic CHAN 2024 debut campaign.
Hosting the team at State House, the President hailed their grit and unity that saw them conquer giants like Morocco, DRC, Angola, and Zambia. “You brought the nation together. You made us believe again,” he said, reminding Kenyans that this is only the beginning of the journey to AFCON 2027.
Each of the 27 players and 15 technical bench members will now own half of a two-bedroom affordable house in a town of their choice, with the government’s Affordable Housing Scheme paving the way for them to secure homes that symbolize stability and legacy.
But the President’s vision went beyond football. In an unprecedented move, he announced a massive overhaul of cash rewards for athletes across all sports:
- Olympic gold medallists: KSh 3 million (up from KSh 750,000)
- Silver medallists: KSh 2 million
- Bronze medallists: KSh 1 million
- Team sports winners: up to KSh 750,000 per athlete, a stunning 650% increase
This marks the dawn of a new era — where Kenyan talent will not only fly the flag high but also secure tangible rewards for their sacrifices.
For Harambee Stars, the KSh 1 million grant is more than just money; it is a brick-and-mortar testimony of their resilience.
For Kenyan athletes everywhere, it is proof that the government is finally backing them with integrity and purpose.
As coach Benni McCarthy said, the support is “crucial for the nation’s sporting success.” For the players, it’s a reminder that when they sweat for Kenya, Kenya stands with them.
From State House to stadiums worldwide, a clear message has been sent: Kenya’s champions will no longer walk alone.
