Chebukati’s son: Please stop mocking us, forgive my father!

A man claiming to be the son of former IEBC chairperson Wafula Chebukati has passionately called on Kenyans to stop mocking his family following Chebukati’s death on February 20, 2025.

In an emotional viral video, he expressed shock and heartbreak at seeing some Kenyans celebrate his father’s passing, emphasizing that Chebukati dedicated his life to serving the nation.

“I have never seen Kenyans unite in celebrating the death of a fellow Kenyan as I have seen people rejoice and ridicule us,” Chebukati’s son said.

“For the first time, I have seen Kenyans celebrate someone’s death—not the death of an ordinary person, but that of a leader who played a significant role in advancing the country’s democracy.”

When asked why some Kenyans were reacting this way, he suggested that bitterness over Chebukati’s work at IEBC fueled the mockery.

He strongly defended his father’s legacy, insisting that Chebukati acted strictly within the law, regardless of public opinion.

“He did his work with respect and in adherence to the constitution because Chebukati valued the law and never went against it,” he stated.

“He never made decisions based on personal feelings but always followed the law and the constitution. Maybe things didn’t go as some Kenyans expected, and because he upheld the law, they are now mocking the family online.”

He made an emotional plea for compassion, urging Kenyans to allow his family to mourn in peace, even if some felt aggrieved.

“Please let us honour and lay Mzee to rest with respect. Please don’t mock the family,” he pleaded.

“Some people are saying they will drink and celebrate, but that truly hurts—knowing that there are Kenyans willing to spend money to celebrate his death.”

The grieving son also revealed that the family chose to mourn privately, deeply affected by the loss of a man he described as “straightforward and honest.”

“We are mourning Chebukati. This is a huge loss, and we are going through a difficult time because he was a good man—straightforward and honest,he said.

“Chebukati always carried out his responsibilities in accordance with the constitution.”

He also expressed heartfelt gratitude to President William Ruto and leaders like Kalonzo Musyoka for their support during this painful time.

“To all the leaders who have condoled with us, we say thank you and may God bless you.”

This emotional appeal highlights the deep personal pain behind the public figure, reminding Kenyans of the humanity of those affected by national controversies.
