Kenya prepares to bid a heartfelt farewell to volleyball legend Janet Wanja, as she is laid to rest on January 3 at Lang’ata Cemetery. Her legacy will be celebrated on January 2 at Kasarani Gymnasium, drawing thousands to honor a true icon.
Additionally, a burial service will be held at Lang’ata High School on Friday morning before her final sendoff.
The burial program, however, remains tentative and may be subject to changes.
Wanja passed away at 40 on Friday at MP Shah Hospital after a prolonged battle with gallbladder cancer. A celebrated athlete, she secured five African titles, a World Grand Prix victory, and represented Kenya at the 2004 Athens Olympics.
Her last role was as the fitness trainer for the Malkia Strikers at the Paris Olympics this year.

“Love one another, and take care of yourselves, and the family.” Those were the last words spoken by former Kenya women’s volleyball star and Malkia Strikers setter, Janet Wanja, who passed away on Thursday night.
Her brother Kevin Kimani who is a footballer and currently plays for Mathare United on loan, shared a heartbreaking photo on them holding hands and wrote, ‘MY SOUL BLEEDS’
He poured out his emotions in another Instagram post, this time paired with Gramps Morgan’s soulful track People Like You—a heartbreaking glimpse into his shattered heart.
The two shared an unbreakable bond, a connection so deep it was more than just brother and sister—it was unshakable.
Additionally, Kevin Kimani thanked the Kenya Pipeline Company, Kenya Volleyball Federation, National Olympic Committee of Kenya, and Football Kenya Federation for helping Janet Wanja with financial and medical support throughout her journey.
“Our sincere and deepest gratitude goes out to Kenya Pipeline company for walking the journey with us from the beginning and tirelessly providing all she needed in terms of medical support,” he added.
