Heartbreak and hope: Ugandan boxer Shakib shares pain of wife Zari’s miscarriage

Ugandan socialite and business mogul Zari Hassan has laid bare one of her most painful chapters—revealing that she suffered a miscarriage during her first pregnancy with husband Shakib Cham Lutaaya earlier this year.

Her confession comes after weeks of speculation triggered by viral photos of what fans assumed was a baby bump. Zari clarified that the pictures were from a set shoot, not a real pregnancy, calling out critics for rushing to conclusions.

“People are silly. They see me posting daily on Snapchat and still think I’m pregnant. Can I get pregnant in two days? I even hashtagged it was a set, but they ran with it,” she said.

But behind the scenes, Zari admitted she truly was expecting—only to lose the pregnancy at six weeks in May.

Despite the devastating loss, she remains hopeful: “He is my person, my go-to. Other men never understood me the way Shakib does. God gave him to me as a gift. We’ll try again.”

The couple, though scarred by grief, are holding on to love and the dream of building a family together.

Zari is already a proud mother of five—three with her late partner Ivan Semwanga and two with Tanzanian superstar Diamond Platnumz. Shakib, too, has children from previous relationships.

For now, they carry both the weight of loss and the light of hope—walking through pain together, hand in hand.

During the same interview, he went on to share his thoughts on receiving a lot of attention on social media.

“I try to ignore so many things on social media. When I see people talking about me negatively, I don’t give it attention. I try to stay the same person I was from way back. It hasn’t affected me, I came in knowing people will talk about me,” Shakib said.

Additionally, he mentioned that he and Zari have not followed each other on Instagram for like a year now.

When asked why, he said, “Actually, we have never talked about it. I do not know why we don’t follow each other, but I think that’s a question for her”.

However, he said he would follow her if she followed him first. “It’s a tough question, I don’t know why it’s like that”, Shakib said regarding the couple not following each other on Instagram.
