The hip-hop world has lost a legend. Irving “Irv Gotti” Lorenzo Jr., the visionary behind Murder Inc. Records, has passed away at the age of 54, leaving the industry in shock and mourning.
While the official cause of death has not been announced, Gotti had struggled with diabetes-related complications and suffered multiple strokes in recent years.
“It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved father, Irving ‘Irv Gotti’ Lorenzo, on February 5, 2025. Surrounded by family and friends, he departed this world, leaving behind a legacy that will forever resonate in the hearts of those who knew him and the countless lives he touched,” his family said in a statement.
They called him an “incredible man, a true visionary who transformed the hip-hop industry and changed the game for artists and fans alike.”

“His passion for music and dedication to his craft inspired many, and his contributions will continue to influence future generations,” his family said.
A Legacy That Defined an Era
Gotti wasn’t just a producer—he was a movement. The mastermind behind the careers of Ja Rule, Ashanti, and DMX, his signature blend of rap and R&B shaped the sound of the early 2000s. From Always on Time to Foolish and I’m Real, his fingerprints were on some of the biggest hits of the era.
Russell Simmons, co-founder of Def Jam, was among the first to pay tribute, using Gotti’s passing to shed light on the health crisis disproportionately affecting Black men and women.
“We cannot let Irv Gotti’s death go unnoticed without addressing the epidemic of chronic illness in our community,” Simmons urged. “We must take care of ourselves, or we will continue losing our brightest stars too soon.”
A Career of Triumphs and Trials
From signing Jay-Z and DMX during his early days at Def Jam to founding Murder Inc. in 1998, Gotti was instrumental in shaping hip-hop history.
But his career wasn’t without setbacks. A high-profile federal case in the mid-2000s cast a shadow over his empire, though he was ultimately acquitted.

In recent years, he pivoted to television, launching the BET series Tales, which fused hip-hop with scripted storytelling.
Additionally, Lyor Cohen, former Def Jam executive and now YouTube’s global head of music, reflected on Gotti’s passing: “Irv brought the heat when Def Jam needed it most. He was hip-hop through and through. His loss is immeasurable.”

A Final Goodbye
Irv Gotti leaves behind his children, family, and a hip-hop industry forever shaped by his genius. His death is a devastating reminder of how fleeting life can be.
As fans and fellow artists mourn, one thing remains clear—his influence will live on in the music that defined a generation.
