‘Stepping back isn’t failure, it’s strength.’ Mejja opens up about the pain behind the pause and the passion fueling his comeback

Genge sensation Major Nameye Khadija, better known as Mejja, has long been cherished for his infectious humor and vivid storytelling, an artist whose lyrics feel like lived experiences, told through rhythm, wit, and heart.

But in an exclusive and heartfelt conversation with Radio47 on Thursday, May 29, Mejja peeled back the curtain on what’s next and why the journey getting there has been anything but easy.

Mejja revealed he’s working on a brand-new album, one that not only pushes his own creative boundaries but opens doors for rising talent, giving fresh voices a chance to shine.

“Hii album si venye unafikiria,” he said with his trademark charisma. “Kuna pahali hadi naimba, nimeimba mbaya… nimetoa hadi mishipa huko.”

Adding, It’s raw. It’s emotional. And it’s deeply personal.

The ‘Tabia za Wakenya’ hitmaker admitted he has intentionally delayed the album’s release, not because of doubt but because everyone wants to be a part of it. And that, he says, could easily water down its impact.

“I want to keep fans anticipating,” he shared, expressing a quiet confidence that this project will speak for itself when the time is right.

But behind the laughter and clever wordplay lies a season of deep reflection. Mejja opened up about taking a five-month break from music not because the creativity had run dry, but because life hit him hard.

The loss of his manager, who was more than just a professional partner, a confidant, a friend shook him to the core.

“People panic-release music because they think fans will forget them,” he said. “But if you are not okay, then art won’t be either.”

In those quiet months, Mejja chose healing over hustle. He chose to pause, process, and protect his peace.

“If I had dropped a song in that state, it wouldn’t be what it is now. You have to fix the issue first.”

It’s a reminder that behind the beat is a beating heart. That sometimes, the most powerful thing an artist can do is step back stating, stepping back is not a weakness; it is wisdom.

He also shared his philosophy on collaborations and remixes revealing that he doesn’t jump into features for clout or hype. “Chemistry, he says, comes first. “If it’s not real, it’s not right.”

Now, Mejja stands at the edge of a new chapter. One shaped by pain, growth, and a burning desire to give fans something they’ve never heard before, something that cost him everything but brought him back to life.

And if his words are anything to go by, “nimeimba mbaya” might just be the understatement of the year.
