Zuchu: My dad never showed any interest in me

Zuchu, the daughter of renowned Tanzanian Taarab singer Khadija Kopa, shared a heartbreaking revelation in a TikTok video about her strained relationship with her father.

She disclosed how her mother, despite her efforts, couldn’t bridge the gap between Zuchu and her dad.

“The things my mum did for my dad, I would never have given him a child. My mum used to force my father to be close to me. They have never stopped communicating; that is the weird part, but my dad would never ask about me. She would even say, Zuhura is here; talk to her, but my dad does not have an interest. My mum did a lot, and he just didn’t want me,” she said, her words filled with pain.

Zuchu shared a heartbreaking memory of writing her dad a harsh letter in Class 4 out of frustration. He visited two days later, gave her 20,000 Tanzanian shillings (SH. 1,000), and disappeared again until she was in Form 3.

Even after moving to India for university, her attempts to reconnect were ignored. She later dropped out of school to chase her music dreams.

Zuchu revealed that her father has remarried and prioritized his new family.

“I always wanted to have a relationship with him. I knew his house, but I knew he had a wife and other kids, and at the time, that other side was more important. But my mum has never kept me away,” she added, her tone reflecting a mix of longing and acceptance.

In a separate interview on Wasafi FM in March 2024, Khadija Kopa opened up about her struggles with finding love later in life. She shared that younger men often approach her, but she desires a mature partner.

“I’ve seen them, but I don’t want boys. God has not granted me the will to get a man who is mature,” she said.

She emphasized her preference for maturity, saying:
“I tell them they are kids, they don’t deserve me, and I tell them to go look for younger women. I don’t have time for that.”

Khadija Kopa has faced her share of personal loss, including the death of her late husband, Zuchu’s step-dad, Jaffary Ally, who passed away in 2013 after a brief illness in Bagamoyo, and her son Omar Kopa, a talented Taarab singer, who died a few years ago.

Zuchu’s biological father, Othman Soud, was a prison warden and a songwriter for Khadija Kopa.

Despite the challenges, Zuchu has carved her own path, becoming a household name and is spreading her wings far and wide in her musical journey.

Currently dating her boss, Diamond Platnumz, the two have been in an on-and-off relationship for more than two years, adding another chapter to her journey.
